In mid-June, Dr. Marcus van Lier-Walqui, CCSR associate research scientist traveled to Houston, TX to participate in the intensive observation period (IOP) of the DOE-funded TRacking Aerosol Convection interactions ExpeRiment (TRACER). This field campaign’s goals are to collect detailed observations on isolated thunderstorms in the Houston regions to better understand the processes that govern them, and how aerosols from pollution may affect their strength and lifecycle. The IOP brings together advanced radars, lidars, radiometers, aerosol measurements, drones, and a lightning mapping array to give a unique multidimensional perspective on these storm systems, and help improve our understanding so that we can make better predictions of their impact on weather and climate. To find out more please click here for the TRACER campaign.
